The objective of the project was to develop a practical informational material regarding sexual health for lesbian and bisexual women with a vulva. Since this is a subject usually ignored when discussing LGBTQ+ people’s health in Brazil and prejudice against queer women in healthcare is still a reality, I find important to stress the issues and to offer solutions within my reach. Besides the guide itself, I have developed a theorethical work analyzing the context in which we are placed regarding sexual health for lesbian and bisexual women taking into account their matters and medical professionals’ issues.
WHICH SUBJECTS ARE APPROACHED ON VELCRO SEGURO?
Subjects such as basic concepts in sexual health, STD transmition means, anatomy of the vulva, safe sex and gynecological consultation matters (pap smear, breast exam, etc) are showcased in the guide.
WHO COLLABORATED ON THE PROJECT?
The project was oriented by Professor Juliana Petermann (UFSM) and co-oriented by Lara Cezar. The medical information was provided by Dr. Thais Machado Dias (UNICAMP).
MAKING VELCRO SEGURO
The guide was illustrated and written by me, using an IPad Pro, Procreate, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photohop.
The illustrations were tought to make the (sometimes awkward) subject more approachable and didactic for both younger and older women since ilustration is a universal language.
The “Know Your Vulva” part mimcs teen magazines’ posters, but instead of a hot celebrity, you have a very self explanatory image of a vulva.
THE GUIDE
Velcro Seguro is available for free as a digital and printable version. The guide was developed to put together the largest amount of information into the smallest format possible, so it can be easily read and distributed.
